Welcome back to another great school year! It is time to place your order for Pizza Round #1, which will begin on Monday, September 24 and continue each Monday that we have school through November 26. Please click this link (https://form.jotform.com/
You may order pizza lunch for your child for any Monday that we attend school. Pizza is delivered just before the lunch hour. If you have a child in Kindergarten that is full day or attending SIGIS childcare you can order pizza for him/her. Order for all Mondays in each round or any combination of Mondays that you choose.
There will be eight Mondays in this pizza round – there are four rounds of pizza this year, giving you the opportunity to order pizza for your child throughout the year if you happen to miss the deadline for ordering.
One slice of Nitza’s pizza is 1/8 of a large pizza. Both cheese and pepperoni are available. The cost is $2.50 per slice. Please double check your order totals before clicking submit.
Thank you for your support with pizza Mondays. This fundraiser is invaluable at BK- it gives you the opportunity to offer a hot lunch to your child, while helping to fund some of the wonderful extras that the School Council provides to every student at BK!
If you would like to volunteer on pizza distribution days, please email Kerry at jkbodell@shaw.ca.
Thank you

Christmas time is fast approaching and so is the Christmas Concert. This year’s concert will involve all the students from grade one to grade six. Two concerts, entitled “The Loaned Manger”, will be held on Thursday, December 7th, 2017, at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm in the Bertha Kennedy School gym.
All Grade 1 – 6 students are participating in both the 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm concerts. All students will perform in the grand finale and must remain with their class during the concert.
There will be a dress rehearsal in the morning on the 7th, which is when all the students in the school will be able to view the concert. While parents are encouraged to attend our afternoon or evening performance we will be limiting admission to the dress rehearsal to students only. Not only are we limited in space, but the rehearsal is just that: a practice, and not polished enough or intended for an audience.
Tickets are $5.00/ticket, and this will cover incidental costs (lighting, costumes, equipment rentals, licensing etc.) This year you can order tickets online through School Cash at https://GSACRD.schoolcashonline.com. Tickets will go home the day after you order them.
Unfortunately, fire regulations state that we may only seat 400 in our gym at any given time, so please try to get your ticket order in early to avoid disappointment. Remember the deadline is December 4th.
There will be a 50/50 raffle and tickets will be available for purchase prior to the concert, as well as raffle tickets for gift baskets, with proceeds to go directly to the Friends of Bertha Kennedy to enhance your child’s education.
As previously announced BK is in need of a new playground to replace our wooden structure. We are holding our first meeting on Monday January 15th at 7 pm in the multi purpose room at the school. Free Babysitting will be provided. This is the very beginning so please come and share your ideas, there are many different ways to help as this project will take upwards of 2-3 years to fundraise for. The more experience and hands on deck will make it go much more efficiently.
We need your expertise, brainstorming power, networking abilities and much much more!
Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us at friendsofberthakennedy@gmail.com
From 9:00 – 12:30, Bertha Kennedy will be participating in the spirit of the greatest winter athletic event – the Olympics! This morning will allow students to participate in athletics while demonstrating our BKATS values.
All students have been cross-graded into ‘countries’ to participate in 4 events.
A couple things to please note, so that students can have the best experience possible.
We are still looking for toboggans/sleds (no crazy carpets or saucers please) for the ‘Luge” event. We need the sleds to have ropes so that students can pull. If you are able to share yours with us, please bring it to the school on Thursday with your name on it.
We are also looking for empty 4Litre milk/juice jugs for our ‘curling’ event. If you have any, please send these in with your child before Thursday.
Reminders for students
Although the weather seems like it will co-operate, we ask that all students are dressed safely to participate outside. All students will require snowpants, boots, mitts/gloves, toque and jacket. Please write your child's’ name in all outdoor items.
If students own a helmet with facemask, they are asked to please bring it for the road hockey game. If they do not own one, not to worry, we will have eye protection for them to use.
Snack will happen from 10:15-10:30. During this time students will also be going to the washroom and getting on their outdoor gear. As this is a quick timeframe, please make sure that their snack is simple and quick to eat. Although students will receive some hot chocolate around 9:30, they may need to bring a water bottle with their name on it.
Thank you for your help to make this another fantastic day at BK!

Greetings, Bertha Kennedy families!
I'm sure this is something we say every year, but we cannot believe that we are at the end of June again! It has been a year full of learning, leadership, and love. We have seen so much development in our students during this past year. As we reflect on this past school year, we are reminded of the many special qualities of our Bertha Kennedy Catholic School community: Through the Works of Mercy there has been so many moments throughout the year that we have witnessed via students, staff, and parents showing great care and concern for others. On a daily basis, there was evidence of someone who had reached out and helped another. There are so many people in our community who lead others by simply demonstrating kindness, compassion, and support. Thank you to everyone who has ‘Made a Difference’. All members of our community are active participants in the daily and seasonal activities in our school. We have consistently noticed kindness extended to newcomers and guests of our school. Because of this we have regularly received feedback from our guests about how much they love coming to Bertha Kennedy. Thank you to all for your kind and welcoming nature! We are truly blessed!
As much as we are looking forward to summer holidays, we are sorry to say farewell to a number of students and their families. For those families leaving us to attend school next year in a variety of locations, around St. Albert, the province and across Canada, you will be in our thoughts and prayers next year. We encourage you to remember that, ‘We are all God’s Hands’ as you become members of new school communities!
We pray that God blesses our school community with a safe and relaxing summer vacation. We look forward to seeing you all in the 2017/2018 school year!

YOU’RE INVITED:
Come and Experience The Blanket Exercise: The Indigenous history we were rarely taught
When: Tuesday, February 13 at 6:30pm
Where: J. J. Nearing Music Room
What is the Blanket Exercise?
The Blanket Exercise is a hands-on way to explore the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada. It is a powerful way to work toward reconciliation and to empower people to build bridges of understanding and respect.
It was developed by KAIROS, and ecumenical organization in which the Catholic Church is a member of.
The blanket exercise begins with blankets arranged on the floor to represent Canada before the arrival of Europeans. The participants represent Indigenous people. They respond to various cues in a script read by a narrator and interact by reading prepared scrolls.
Why should I participate in it?
As followers of Jesus, we have a duty to heal broken relationships in the world. By participating in the Blanket Exercise, we recognize that harm has been done and there is a need to work towards healing and reconciliation.
As one of the calls to actions as presented by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Blanket Exercise offers a way to increase your own knowledge and experience. A completion certificate will be offered upon request.
Please RSVP to pkelly@gsacrd.ab.ca by Thursday, January 25th. 780-418-6330
Bertha Kennedy Catholic School is now accepting Kindergarten Registrations for the 2022-2023 school year! Please follow the link below:
New Student Registration Form - Students who do not have an active GSACRD enrolment for the 2022-2023 school year.
ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR 2022-2023
Please note: To attend kindergarten your child must be five years of age on or before December 31 of the school year currently enrolled. Your child could start kindergarten in September at the age of four, as long as he or she turns five on or before December 31.
Registrations are ongoing at Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools. For planning and funding purposes, student registration is encouraged by the end of March for the upcoming school year. We ask that all new students register at the school they will be attending as soon as possible to ensure a space in the program of their choice. For registration during the summer months, please use our online registration system or contact District Office for additional support. Registrations are accepted until September 30th. Please call your preferred school for registration and program information.
In most cases, students attend the designated school within the attendance boundary of where they live (see attendance areas). While we try to accommodate all students wishing to attend Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, there are occasions when non-resident students are not accepted to the school of their choice. If the school is full to capacity or non-resident students require special education services, they may be offered a choice to attend another school and may be required to pay a cross-boundary transportation fee, if yellow bus service is required.
For pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, and for students new to Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools (including homeschooling and cyber school), legal proof of the student's name, residency and guardianship will be required when you register. Please provide the school with photocopies of required documents, which will be placed in your child's Alberta Education Official Student Record.
Please review Documentation for New Students for specific requirements.
First Nations, Métis, Inuit Parent Information - If your child(ren) are of First Nations, Métis or Inuit descent please click here to find out why it is beneficial to self-identify your child(ren) when enrolling them at your school of choice.

Spring is just around the corner and that means it is time for our 7th Annual Hanging Basket Sale!
This year, the baskets will be available by PRE-ORDER ONLY. The format has changed this year, as our supplier is handling the basket sales differently as well. We will be selling our 10" Hanging Baskets for $27 each. You can choose from both sun or shade baskets. In the past, these baskets have been absolutely amazing! So full, healthy and have tons of color. Imagine starting the season with a fully grown basket to show off! Use them as hanging baskets, or take of the hangers and plant in planter - very versatile.
For easy ordering, please click this link to buy on-line: https://form.jotform.
The deadline for PRE-ORDERS is NOON on Friday, April 6th. (No baskets will be available for sale on the pick-up date, so please make sure you place your pre-order.)
Baskets will be available for PICK-UP at the school on Wednesday, May 16th from 12:30 - 5:30pm. It is a first come, first choice pick-up.

A reminder that during this flu season, we are also seeing students with viral gastroenteritis. One of the most important notes in this info sheet is that people affected need to be symptom-free for 48 hours before coming into contact with others. At school, we are in very close proximity and the sharing of germs is very prevalent. Please help us to all be healthy by keeping sick children at home until they are symptom-free for 48 hours. At Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools, one of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our students arrive safely at school each and every day.
To enhance our existing absence check procedure, we are introducing a new, more efficient student absence reporting system called SchoolConnects SafeArrival. This new system will reduce the time it takes to verify student attendance, make it easy for you to report your child’s absence and easy for staff to respond to unexplained student absences.
With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence (in advance or before morning bell time) using one of these 3 convenient methods:
These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time.
In addition, we will use the SchoolConnects automated notification system to contact parents whose child is absent and the absence was not reported in advance. The automated notification system will attempt to contact parents at multiple contact numbers. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts after 20 minutes, office staff will follow up.
By reporting your child absent in advance using the SafeArrival toll-free number, SafeArrival website or Greater St. Albert Schools app, you will NOT receive these calls.
We will start using our new absence reporting system on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Parents with email addresses on file at the school will receive an invitation to log in to the Parent Portal and activate their account.
As of Wednesday, November 1, 2017 all reporting of absences in advance should go through the SafeArrival website, mobile app, or toll-free number. Please do not contact the school directly to report an absence in advance.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we implement this new system.

The BOBKAT Birthday Book Club is a great way to celebrate your child’s birthday while helping get new books into the BK Learning Commons.
Four times a year, forms are sent out with students where they can choose a book with their parent or guardian for their birthday. Forms are to be returned with Cash or Cheque to the BK Library Technician who will then inventory the selected choice. The book club sheets have a list of books that range in reading level and subject matter. There is something for everyone!
The student then gets to be the first person to check out their chosen book!
To participate:
Your child’s name will be included in the front page of the book they have selected as a way to celebrate their birthday and thank them for their contribution to the BK Learning Commons.
Thank You for Donating to our Library!

You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.
